In our previous blog-articles we have already highlighted what a workation is and what are the reasons why there is more and more of it. Let’s take a closer look at the changes in the world of work and our jobs. Where is the journey going?
The boundaries between holidays and work become blurred
Quite apart from the fact that workations are becoming more and more important, the world of work will continue to change drastically and with it the patterns of the classical world of work, which for many are still inconceivable. Be it the 5-day week, the 8-hour day from 9 to 5 or the need to be physically at work at all. With our Smartphones, Laptops and Tablets many freelancers and many employees of the information industry already work from home (Homeoffice) or other places. Increasing digitalization also means that more and more jobs are being created in precisely these industries. In short, the boundaries between work and leisure are disappearing.
Unfortunately, this can also be a disadvantage. This is the case when companies expect their employees to be willing to spend their free time as a result of the aforementioned circumstances and we have exactly the “wrong” fusion of work and holiday or leisure time described in our definition.
The background to this is that in many cases a job is still only for the purpose of earning money through hard work and buying things that we don’t really need, but that we want to impress others with. Employers take advantage of that.
Fortunately, however, the shift is moving more and more in the direction of using the work to realize ourselves and to pursue our passions.
Companies and employees are rethinking
Millennials and digital nomads are leading the way and are already thinking and living this change. They work from appealing environments and inspire their creativity not only through ever new places, but especially through inspiring exchanges with others who live this new form of work. (Maybe you’d rather be a reader?). Although there are still a few here and there who earn their money from hard work in these cases – even if they do so from exotic places – the trend just mentioned continues to grow. It’s no longer just about shoveling masses of coal ashore, but about doing a job that’s fun to do or working on exciting projects that you’re fulfilling yourself. In summary one could say: The new wage, the new money is purpose, sense and fulfilment.
This leads to the fact that also enterprises must rethink ever more. In the future, large companies and corporations will have a hard time compared to smaller start-ups because they are usually very sluggish and have rigid structures that do not yet fit in with the new working world. But that doesn’t change the fact that they too will adapt and jump on the inexorable train of change in our working world. Companies like Google are leading the way and are currently bringing free time to the office with, for example, table football and sleeping corners. But this is just the beginning and these companies will also increasingly implement the concepts lived by digital nomads.
Will the classic office soon be history?
Can you imagine that the classic office will soon no longer exist? But that’s exactly where the journey goes – Bye, bye Office. Just look at how the coworking concept is growing. Offices all over the world where you can work flexibly. Coworking will sooner or later replace the classic office. And so the concept of coworking, which offers so much more than coworking, is becoming more and more important. Driven by the constantly changing nature of work, the revolution of our working world is unstoppable. The time will come when people will no longer go to work in the office but exclusively in coworking spaces and on workations.
visions for the future
And still further spun: It is quite conceivable that in a few years you will often only be working virtually with others – virtual and augmented reality make it possible. Imagine you put on VR glasses and are suddenly in a room with your colleagues. You can see and talk to each other as if you were standing next to each other. In fact, one is lying in a hammock on Bora Bora and the other is in a small hut in the middle of Brazil’s jungle. And this is just one of many other scenarios that the future holds for our working world.
And if you don’t yet live the concepts mentioned above, then take this first thought-provoking impulse with you and let yourself be inspired, for example, by new ideas on a workation or breathe life into your own idea. Because be honest: Do you want to continue earning money or instead earn purpose, meaning and fulfillment? In the latter case, the money comes all by itself.
