Simply put, a workation is the fusion of work and vacation. Or to put it another way: to work where others go on holiday.
The term workation originates as so often from English and is composed of the two words work and vacation. In this context, one could distinguish a workation in the classical sense into 2 types:
The “wrong” combination of work & vacation:
This is the case if you have planned a relaxing holiday, but you are forced to take your work with you, e.g. because of an urgent project or because your boss expects you to reply to your mails while on holiday. Your thoughts revolve around your work and you hardly manage to put your mobile phone and laptop aside. Recovery? – No chance! Impossible to recharge your batteries, relax or spend time with your family or friends. When you return, you are probably not more relaxed than before your holiday, rather you might be more stressed. In short: A work-life balance fail!
The “right” combination of work & vacation:
On the other hand there is the combination where you voluntarily work from your holiday. In this scenario you do the same work you always do, whether from the office or at home, with the difference that you do it from a holiday destination, an exotic location and then of course after work you have the opportunity to do things you couldn’t do at home like swimming in the sea, surfing or catching a sunburn, when everyone else is freezing in winter time.
Ultimately, a right or good workation differs from a false, classical workation only from the intention and the mindset with which you set off. The goal of the Workation: To live and work for a limited time in attractive places, whether alone, with friends or as a whole company unit.
But a workation can be so much more than the pure fusion of work and vacation. For us, a workation is an experience that can take you and/or your business, your project to the next level. It can be an unforgettable experience from which you can profit all your life and of which you will report in many years still full of joy. You can find out how to create such an unforgettable experience in our online congress, book and this blog.
In this context it also matters if you just go on a workation on your own and work from a hammock on the beach (don’t get me wrong – that’s beautiful too) or if you go in the company of people with the same interests. Be it other entrepreneurs, freelancers or colleagues from your job. In fact the community from our point of view is the very heart of a workation.
We therefore define a workation as travelling to a more or less distant place outside your daily routine together with like-minded people. To then spend a great time with the other participants, have fun and work on yourself and/or your business/project at the same time.
Of course, the definition leaves a lot of room for the exact form of a workation. And that’s a good thing, because a workation is as individual as a fingerprint and difficult to generalize. There is a suitable workation for absolutely everyone, as long as you are open-minded and ready to embark on something new. Let yourself be inspired by the workations on our site.
